For me these crochet stocking shapes have gone too far. They're easy to make, but have lost their appeal. Now I have at least one more approach to a "real" stocking to try before I decide how to proceed.

yeah I know what you mean. I think it may have something to do with the scale of the size of the actual stitches to the stocking... the knitted stitches are much smaller than the crochet ones and the knitted stocking seems in proportion.
